There have been requests for the lesson study evaluations to be posted. Here are some early bird evaluations from two extremely dedicated practitioners. The responses really demonstrate how lesson study adds value not only to the teacher’s professional learning, but also develops a deeper and richer content base.
Initial Lesson Study Evaluations
Appreciation again to our Lesson Study team.
Glenn.
Questions I will use when interviewing our participating Lesson Study teachers.
- Were you exposed to this process in your undergraduate teacher study?
- Had you ever used a framework such as lesson study prior to this process?
- Prior to this process, can you outline how, if at all, you undertook self reflection of your pedagogy.
- Could you outline any fears or the like you may have had prior to undertaking this process.
- What expectations did you bring to the initial lesson?
- Did you find the four key questions useful when reviewing the lesson?
- Were major modifications made after your reflections?
- Did you find yourself dynamically if you like, ‘self reflecting’ during the revised lesson?
- Did the process heighten your awareness of outcomes 1.2.1 and 1.2.3 and embedding the QT Framework in your pedagogy?
- Did the design of the process assist you in reflecting on each lesson, with emphasis on the deep knowledge that is addressed in the revised lesson?
Forum responses will be posted on September 12.
Glenn.
Here is a coding doc I developed using Hattie’s (03) prototypic elements of an expert teacher. I have trialed this using my Cogs unit (Products Services and Systems) and found it very useful. It is not a locked doc. My open source mind working again
If you make any changes please filter them back as I would love to see what happens.
LMPS Hattie (03) Coding Framework
Have a play around with it. I’m going to try to develop a blend between this and the QT Reference Check seen in the previous post.
- 2/9 Answer to John: Yeh, I probably would use it as a dynamic doc throughout the unit, scribbling all over it. I guess if you fill it up print a new one off. I find with the QT sheet, it turns into a great evaluation tool at the end of the term. Also NSW DET Connected Outcomes Groups are found in the blogroll if you haven’t already found it. Also drill around in the Cogs programming starters also in the blogroll and you will find the English portal. Great resources there too. I use them extensively. And Yes, a skype hook up is possible. NSW DET does not allow it on their server though. Weekends are ok. GMail back. Have fun in chilly Vic.
- 3/9 Answer to Leonie: Do what ever you want to the doc. All I ask is throw it back so I can see what you did with it. I’m interested to see how we can develop Hattie in line with the QTF for coding and lesson study. Gmail it back. Cheers.
Glenn.
I have had a query from a colleague in the Riverina region on how we make sure we include the QT framework into our teaching. I will outline how I embed the QTF into my teaching. I use this method for all of my program (spelling, guided reading, writing, maths, Cogs etc….whatever) attached is the doc.
QT Reference Check
This is a simple doc that I identify where I am addressing the 18 elements throughout the unit of work. Using this method I can identify if I am heavy in some elements and pretty weak in others. One thing that I insist on is that you cannot try to treat every element in a single lesson unless you are part of a formal collegial Lesson Study process.
See Lesson Study tag
I write on this doc. It is a working document just like your program. It is fluid and can change at any time. At the end of the unit it will have notes and scrawls all over it. This means you have revised and altered your pedagogy. Not a bad habit to own!
I also have the copies of Quality Teaching to support the NSW Professional Teaching Standards Part A and B next to me when I am undertaking a QTF review. They are great docs. No one can remember all the nuances of the framework inside out every second of the day, well I can’t! These docs keep me on track.
You can download the pdfs at the Prof Learning and Leadership Directorate. I have a link on this site.
Hope this helps Daniel.
Good luck and take care.
Glenn and all at LMPS.

Thanks to Loz G & H and C for their agreement to publish this on our qt site
Glenn.
Congratulations to Lauren, Mel, Corrine and Lauren for their professionalism in completing the lesson study cycle. I have proofed the work and it is of the highest quality. This work will now be published in house and elements published online at ‘qtatlmps’ under an agreed creative commons license. This methodology is a wonderful way to self evaluate not only the lesson but your own pedagogy in general.
Please note:
- Those schools that have emailed me for the published papers I will mail the agreed commons documents as soon as possible.
- The schools that have requested a copy of samples of the Triangulated data sheets I sent them yesterday. If you have not received what you requested please mail back to my google mail address gleno2259@gmail.com (easier to manage docs at home
)
Regards and thanks for your support and words of encouragement,
Glenn and the wonderful staff at LMPS.
Our action research is well under way now. This week participants will be provided with time to refine taught lessons using the Quality Teaching Framework coding guidelines. The new lessons will be designed, re-taught and evaluated. The completed documents will be published for use in TPL throughout the school and our partner schools. Best of luck to Mel, Lauren, Corrine and Lauren.
From here we will be once again reflecting on Hattie’s (’03) five dimensions which differentiates expert from experienced teachers. How can we use these attributes of expertise to develop our lesson study frameworks?
- 20/8 – Thanks to our four teachers for their efforts in evaluating and re-designing their numeracy lesson. Next week they will be re-taught, re-evaluated and published. I am looking forward to the final product.
- 25/8 – Finished products are looking awesome. Well done. We will do a collaborative proof read of final products then publish next week.
Glenn.
A busy couple of weeks for TPL.
Places you need to check.
- B & L: Online considerations for Module 3. This will take place over the next two weeks. Online discussion will be a feature of this component. A new category is set up for just this.
- Lesson Study: I am putting a timetable up in the staffroom for you to lock in some time to reflect on your personal lesson study. Please take note of the requirements if you would like to take advantage of this available time. Or leave a comment and I will add you to the list.
- Demonstration Lesson this Wednesday in 4/5O. I have also invited the community to attend.
Cheers, Glenn.
After doing an off the cuff dem lesson for Sharon today in Numeracy, I realised the importance (again) of sharing ideas together as you teach. We will begin lesson study ASAP.
Watch this space.
Week 2 TPL: QT to Support the NSW Teaching Standards – A look at Lesson Study. (Completed)
Beginning Week 3. I (me:) ) will release staff to begin QT Framework coding discussion sessions. The focus of the lesson study will be Numeracy.
Additional Lesson Study focus on IWB’s and the QT Framework. Release time provided by the ‘Counting On’ budget will be provided for staff.
Glenn.
